Dr. Rosario Maria S. Riel-Romero graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She completed internship and General Pediatrics residency both at the Philippine General Hospital and at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital- Wake Forest School of Medicine. She also did a 3 -year Pediatric Neurology fellowship and a one-year Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology both in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology and in Epilepsy. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Neurology and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and is an active member of the Child Neurology Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the American Epilepsy Society where she served in various committees. She is a Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine and is Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurology. She is also the Director of Child Neurology at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and also of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. In addition to patient care, she is active in teaching residents, fellows, and medical students and served as the Co-Director of the Neuroscience Course for Freshman Medical Students for 11 years. She has been actively involved in clinical trials for drugs being studied for treatment of epilepsy. She was elected to the Professors of Child Neurology of the Child Neurology Society of America. In 2010, she received the Distinguished Alumnus award from the University of the Philippines Medical Association in America or the UPMASA. She was elected Chair of the Global Health Section of the American Academy of Neurology in 2018.
