Roger Kelley, MD

Roger E. Kelley, MD assumed Chairmanship of the Department of Neurology at LSU Health Shreveport as of October 1, 2018. He graduated from Tulane Medical School and did a two year medical residency at Harvard-affiliated Deaconess Hospital in Boston prior to his Neurology residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine. This was followed b a fellowship in stroke and neuroimaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. His first faculty position was at Temple University of Miami form July, 1983 until December, 1994. He was named Chairman of the newly established Department of Neurology at LSU-Shreveport in January of 1995 and served in this position until December of 2009. While here, the Neurology residency training program was re-established and has continued to flourish. Dr. Kelley took on a new challenge when he assumed Chairmanship of the newly established separate Department of Neurology at Tulane School of Medicine in January of 2010. It has been very gratifying for Dr. Kelley to be involved in the separation and establishment of an independent and robust Department of Neurology both at LSU in Shreveport and at Tulane. As of the fall of 2018, he has returned to what is now LSU Health Shreveport to provide direction and, hopefully, effective leadership for this new and exciting affiliation. Dr. Kelley has been actively involved in Neurology residency training. He served as Program Director of the Neurology residency training program at the University of Miami from 1983 until 1992. He subsequently was Program Director at LSU Health Shreveport from 2005 until 2009. Dr. Kelley's research has focused on stroke, neuroimaging and neurodegenerative disease. He was previously the local PI for the NASCET study and SPAF while at the University of Miami (Miller) School of Medicine. He has also participated as local PI for WARSS, ACE, CHARISMA, MATCH,ProFESS, WASID and WARCEF along with the Bapineuzumabe Study in Alzheimer's disease as well as a number of potential neuroprotective agent trials in acute ischemic stroke. Dr. Kelley was one of the first to call attention to the commonly observed active bleeding in acute hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, the importance of a mechanistic approach toward the risk of stoke in atrial fibrillation as well as the potential association of lupus anticoagulant in cerebral ischemia. His research has also involved transcranial Doppler and cerebral PET scan. He has recently focused on stem cell therapy in neurorestoration collaborating with Li-Ru Zhao, M.D., Ph.D. at LSU and Jean-Pyo Lee, Ph.D. at Tulane. Dr Kelley has also collaborated in the Bogalusa Heart Study and has been a collaborator on a recently extramurally funded study of cognition in older Vietnamese emigres living in the New Orleans area.
