Community Involvement

Partners for Our Patients, Friends and Neighbors

At Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, we pride ourselves on being part of the north Louisiana communities we serve. We want to make sure everyone who needs healthcare in our area can access it effectively and efficiently.

As a result of the partnership between Ochsner Health and LSU Health Shreveport, we have invested millions of dollars in infrastructure, technology and staffing to expand the services we’re able to offer our patients. Some of the ways we’ve expanded our care include:

  • Making it easier and faster for patients to request a primary care appointment
  • Hiring more doctors and adding more jobs in the community
  • Earning recognition as the state’s first pediatric trauma program
  • Creating our new St. Mary Medical Center campus

We’ve also rolled out our new teleICU program in Monroe to expand our ability to provide intensive care to patients without the need to transfer them to Shreveport. This can lead to shorter hospital stays while keeping our patients closer to home.

In addition, we’ve made it easier for patients to get the primary and urgent care they need with our expansions of these services. Our Internal Medicine and Pediatrics location offers primary care to patients of all ages in southern Shreveport, while our two urgent care locations in Shreveport and Bossier City provide quick medical care for nonemergency illnesses and injuries when patients might not be able to wait for a regular doctor’s appointment.

The Next Generation of Healthcare

We’re not only interested in providing the healthcare our patients need today. We also want to ensure the next generation of healthcare providers is ready to step up to care for our patients. That’s why we are dedicated to continuing our tradition of leadership in medical education.

We’ve seen significant growth in the sizes of our incoming medical school classes — a key component in the fight to reduce our nation’s shortage of qualified doctors. We’ve also established a scholarship, available to graduating Xavier University Students, to cover the cost of the entire four-year medical school program at LSU Health Shreveport. In addition to training medical students and residents, we also help train allied health students who are studying various fields within healthcare.

Community Health and Wellness

Aside from healthcare, we want to take part in crucial community initiatives, giving back to our citizens to help ensure their safety and long-term health. We’re glad to partner with worthy causes in our area.

For example, we help the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana, Caddo Parish Schools and the Community Foundation of North Louisiana in their efforts to provide four days of water safety training at the YMCA to every second grader in Caddo Parish. The Swim for Life program helps kids learn how to identify dangerous situations in water and how to avoid them whenever they can.

Ochsner LSU Health also offers several internal programs and resources to help care for our community. PROTECT is a hospital violence intervention program for victims who are 17 years of age and under. We work with victims, alongside their families, while they are being treated for firearm related injuries. Additionally, our team leads local injury prevention classes by partnering with schools in the area.
