That’s why Ochsner LSU Health's heart and vascular team provides unmatched cardiology care for conditions that affect this critical system. As part of a teaching hospital, we stay at the forefront of new research and technology so that we can provide our patients with the most cutting-edge procedures and treatments available. In fact, our cardiovascular surgeons are equipped to handle the most severe and complex cases in our region.

Ochsner LSU Health's outstanding cardiology services have been recognized on a national level. We've been recognized by the American Heart Association for our commitment to ensuring high standards of heart care for all patients with the Get With The Guidelines® Silver Plus Achievement Award! Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport is dedicated to improving the quality of heart care and the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines® program helps us achieve that goal.

We see patients from throughout north Louisiana at our Heart and Vascular Institute in Shreveport, Louisiana and at our Monroe Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana. Our team of experts diagnose heart and vascular diseases by using a wide range of advanced technology and techniques, such as:

  • Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Echocardiograms, which use high-frequency sound to “see” the heart
  • Electrocardiograms (ECG or EKG) and electrophysiology, which measure the heart’s electrical activity and function
  • Exercise stress testing (observing the heart’s function during exercise)
  • Nuclear medicine (using small amounts of radioactive materials to evaluate the heart and blood vessels), including positron emission tomography (PET) scans

Our team provides advanced cardiovascular for patients with a variety of conditions, including:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm, including repair with nonsurgical stenting
  • Advanced coronary diseases for patients with restenosis (a narrowing of a blood vessel what previously treated for narrowing) and chronic total occlusions
  • Aortic and mitral valve disease, including nonsurgical replacement and repair
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib) and other arrhythmias requiring catheter ablation therapy
  • Coronary heart disease (when the arteries of the heart can’t supply enough blood to the heart)
  • Critical limb ischemia (a severe blockage of the arteries that bring blood to the limbs)
  • Heart disease risk factor management, including hypertension and cholesterol management
  • Heart failure (when the heart can’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body)
  • Heart rhythm disorders, including pacemaker and defibrillator placement
  • Heart valve disease (leaking, stiffening or other problems with the heart’s valves, which control blood flow through the heart)
  • Pediatric heart and vascular conditions for children and teens
  • Peripheral vascular disease (also known as peripheral artery disease, a narrowing of the blood vessels that causes reduced blood flow to the limbs), including nonsurgical repair with stenting
  • Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs and heart)
  • Stroke, including prevention with carotid artery stents
  • Congenital heart disease (those present at birth) for both adults and children
  • Structural heart disease (conditions that affect the heart’s tissues or valves)

Once we know your specific heart or vascular condition, our team of experts will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to address it. Depending on your unique needs, your treatment plan may include one or more of the following:

  • Aortic services
  • Cardiac rehab
  • Consultative clinical cardiology
  • Electrophysiology and heart rhythm disorders
  • Heart surgery (also known as cardiothoracic surgery)
  • Interventional cardiology, which uses image guidance and thin, flexible tubes called catheters to evaluate and treat heart and vascular conditions during minimally invasive surgery
  • Lifestyle modifications, such as changes to your diet and exercise routine
  • Treatment for various forms of arrhythmia, including AFib
  • Cardioconversion procedure for chronic AFib with digital cardiac imaging
  • Pediatric cardiology
  • PET scan
