Mammography

Why Mammograms are Important

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

Because it remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women, early detection remains the key to successful treatment. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend that women should begin having annual mammograms at 40 years old. Women with a family history of breast cancer should speak with their doctor about starting screenings at the age of 35.
