Conditions We Treat

Our sports medicine experts treat and manage illnesses and injuries related to sports, recreational, industrial and exercise activities in all ages. Some of the common injuries and illnesses that we treat include:

• Concussions and other head injuries
• Chronic and acute illnesses, such as mononucleosis (mono), exercise-related asthma, hypertension and diabetes
• Sprains, strains and dislocations
• Acute ankle, knee and shoulder injuries
• Overuse injuries, including tendonitis and stress fractures
• Muscle, tendon and joint injuries
• Obesity and weight-management conditions
• Arthritis
• Osteoarthritis

• Abscesses, lacerations and some skin conditions needing biopsies

Treatments We Provide

Some of the treatments that we provide at Ochsner LSU Health Sports Medicine include:

• Concussion diagnosis and management
• Point-of-care ultrasound diagnosis of injuries
• Ultrasound-guided and anatomic-guided joint injections
• Exercise prescription to help patients increase fitness and/or weight loss
• Osteopathic manual therapy
• Fracture care to include casting/splinting
• Bracing of joints
• Prolotherapy injections
• Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

We also conduct minor procedures, including:

• Incisions and drainage of skin abscesses
• Toenail removal
• Skin biopsies
• Laceration repair

In 2022, Ochsner Health announced an exclusive five-year partnership with internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist James Andrews, MD and the Andrews Institute to form The Ochsner Andrews Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute.

The partnership with the Andrews Institute will enhance Ochsner and Ochsner LSU Health’s physical therapy and sports performance protocols and offerings and serve as a critical step forward in our vision to transform Louisiana into a healthier state by 2030.

We also partner with local high school, college and community teams to provide sports medicine services.

We are the exclusive sports medicine provider for:

• Cabosa Soccer in North Louisiana
• Local high schools including Benton, Airline and C.E. Byrd

Do I need to see a sports medicine doctor or an orthopedic surgeon?

• Sports medicine specialists are capable of caring for the majority of sports-related illnesses and injuries since more than 90% of all musculoskeletal injuries are non-surgical. We also work closely with our colleagues in orthopedic surgery, so we can easily transfer care if the need arises.

When can I start a return-to-play protocol?

• We understand that sitting on the sidelines with an injury is not fun. That is why getting you back in the game is our priority. Each person is different and will require a personalized treatment plan. Therefore, it is important to maintain an open line of communication between you and your doctor.

Where are you located?

• We have two locations for sports medicine services. Our Shreveport clinic is located at 6841 Fern Avenue. Our newest location is Ochsner LSU Health’s state-of-the-art facility at 4481 Viking Drive in Bossier City.
