Dr. Navdeep Samra is a Tenured Professor of Surgery and Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS). He was born in New Delhi, India, where he graduated high school as valedictorian. Dr. Samra received his medical degree with salutatorian honors from Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, in 1998 and went on to complete a junior general surgery residency from Government Medical College, Patiala, Punjab, India, in 2001. Dr. Samra was resident surgeon in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department at Fortis Heart Institute, Mohali in India from 2002 onwards till April 2004 where he pursued his research and scholarly activities apart from clinical work in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. Dr. Samra moved to the United States in 2004 where he began his general surgery internship at LSU Health Shreveport in 2006 and graduated the program in 2011. He then completed a surgical critical care fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2012. Dr. Samra is double board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. As a faculty member at LSU Health Shreveport, he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society in 2013 and was awarded the Best Teaching Faculty award by surgical residents in 2016, 2017, and 2019. He has forty-five plus PubMed indexed research articles and two book chapters, which he has co-authored. Dr. Samra currently serves as the holder of the Charles D. Knight, Sr. M.D., Endowed Professorship in General Surgery. He has also served as the 2015-2016 President of the John C. McDonald Surgical Society. From 2011-2021, Dr. Samra was honored six times at the Evening for Healers, sponsored by the LSU Health Shreveport Foundation, for taking care of critically ill poly-trauma patients. In 2019, he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and in February 2020, he was inducted into the prestigious Society of University Surgeons (SUS). In May 2020, Dr. Samra became Chief of Trauma at LSUHS, and was appointed Trauma Medical Director at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. He was honored with Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Provider of the Month of October in 2020.
