Advanced Care for Pediatric Patients with Neurological Conditions

Our Neurology Center is a modern clinic equipped with the technology and resources needed to provide your child with neurological care for the full range of conditions.

We are the only institution in the community with a fully equipped and staffed long-term video electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring program for both adults and children. We also provide access to the highest level of epilepsy care. Our Epilepsy Center is one of three epilepsy centers in Louisiana to be accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and it is the only Level 4 epilepsy center in the tristate area. To earn a Level 4 distinction means that our Epilepsy Center provides a higher level of care by offering more complex forms of intensive nervous system function monitoring and effective treatment of medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial conditions. Our partnership with the neurosurgical department allows us to offer surgical removal of the epileptic focus in the brain.

Our unrivaled team evaluates and treats patients with:

  • Headaches
  • Seizure Disorders, such as epilepsy
  • Tics and Other Movement Disorders
  • Developmental Concerns
  • Cerebral Palsy, which involves difficulties with balance, movement and posture
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Neuromuscular Disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and muscular dystrophies including Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
  • Pediatric Stroke
  • Demyelinating Disorders, which are conditions that damage the protective layer around optic nerves and nerves in the brain and spinal cord
  • Autoimmune Diseases of the Central Nervous System (CNS), such as multiple sclerosis

We have a full array of neurodiagnostic capabilities.

  • CT Scans are able to quickly provide us with internal images of the body to help us diagnose conditions.
  • MRIs are a tool we use to get a detailed image of the inside of the body that helps direct treatment.
  • Routine EEGs measure brain activity, and they are helpful in diagnosing brain disorders.
  • Long-Term Video and Portable EEG Studies help us identify a child’s epilepsy syndrome and seizure type. (We have hard-wired epilepsy monitoring rooms for adults and children.)
  • Sleep Studies allow us to evaluate, analyze and treat sleep disorders.
  • Electromyograms (EMGs) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) Studies show our team how a child’s nerves and muscles are working by monitoring signals.
  • Single Photon Emission Tomography Scans show brain activity related to blood flow.
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scans allow us to precisely view metabolic abnormalities in the brain.
  • Neuropsychological Testing evaluates a child’s thinking, behavior and social-emotional functioning.
  • Testing for Genetic and Metabolic Disorders is used to help diagnose and treat all types of genetic conditions and metabolic disorders.

Our Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinic gathers on the last Wednesday of every month, where we examine patients with neuromuscular disorders. Infusion and intrathecal therapies, which provide treatment solutions directly to affected areas, are offered for patients with neuromuscular disorders.

When you choose Ochsner LSU Health for pediatric neurology, you get the support of the entire Ochsner network. If your child requires treatment across multiple subspecialties, our team has the ability to work with a wide range of specialists, including those at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

Epilepsy Center

We are one of a few centers in the nation with a Level 4-accredited Epilepsy Surgery program through the National Association of Epilepsy Centers: the highest level of epilepsy care.

Level 4 accreditation requires complex neurodiagnostic testing, including evaluation with intracranially implanted electrodes. Our Epilepsy team is board-certified in Clinical Neurophysiology and/or Epilepsy. Each year, we perform an average of 1,330 EEG studies, 330 long-term video EEGs and 930 sleep studies.
