Ochsner LSU Health opens newly renovated neurosciences intensive care unit

SHREVEPORT, La. – Ochsner LSU Health has opened a renovated neurosciences intensive care unit (ICU) at the Ochsner LSU Health - Academic Medical Center on Kings Hwy. The neurosciences ICU, along with its advanced technology and expert care team, demonstrates the health system’s commitment to providing the highest level of complex neurological care available. Services include treatment for severe strokes, traumatic injuries, brain tumors, uncontrolled seizures and after-surgery care for elective procedures.

The upgraded unit features the expansion from eight to 12 beds, allowing the hospital to treat more people in the community who require highly specialized care. Ochsner LSU Health plans to grow the neurosciences ICU to 23 beds by 2028 to meet the ongoing health needs of the region. Patients recovering from strokes, traumatic injuries and complex brain and spinal surgeries now have access to a dedicated, advanced healing environment built for their specific needs.

A specialized team of board-certified neurocritical care physicians manages the new unit. These experts work closely with a comprehensive care team that includes vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons and specialty-trained nurses. In addition to the renovations, the inclusion of vascular neurology moves the previous unit to a higher level of care for stroke intervention, brain hemorrhages, blood vessel malformations and aneurysms. The unit also provides careful, dedicated monitoring for patients recovering from elective brain surgeries and minimally invasive procedures, such as carotid stents and aneurysm treatments.

"This completely renovated unit reflects our deep commitment to bringing the highest level of neurological care to our community," said Chris Mangin, CEO of Ochsner LSU Health - Academic Medical Center. "By reconfiguring our physical space and bringing together an incredible team of specialists, we are ensuring our patients receive the expert, lifesaving care they deserve right here at home."

"Our neurosciences intensive care unit provides a highly specialized approach to brain and spine health," said Chen Lin, MD, MBA, chair of neurology at Ochsner LSU Health. "With our board-certified critical care physicians and specialty-trained nursing team, we are ready to manage the most complex neurological cases. Whether a patient faces a severe stroke or has uncontrolled seizures, we have the resources and expertise to support their best possible recovery."

Ochsner LSU Health – Academic Medical Center is the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level IV Epilepsy Center. It is also recognized by the American Heart Association for stroke care, receiving the Get with the Guidelines- Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite designation.
